USA - The West April 2012 Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Day 4

We started the day very early and headed to the north to South Dakota. Even though the deviation to South Dakota will cost us half a day of traveling, we would not want to miss this amazing attraction…… Mount Rushmore!!

I first encountered this iconic landmark when I was 12 years old during the screening of Superman II. The faces of Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt were transformed into the faces of the villain aliens……

From Fort Collins, it took almost 3 ½ hours driving to reach the National memorial which being visited by almost 3 million people a year,  Being carved from the granite walls of Black Hills, this piece work of art actually never completed  when it first started back in 1927 through 1941. Looking up directly from the terrace, I wonder how they did it to realize this gigantic sculpture….

On our way back we stopped at another more ambitious project that is still on-going. This will be the biggest man-made sculpture project ever built in the world that will take many more years to complete. Privately owned, this Crazy Horse Memorial will eventually reveal a sculpture of an Indian Warrior (Oglala Lakota) riding a horse and pointing to the distance.

Our trip continues towards Wyoming where we took a break in the middle of nowhere and call it a day…..
